SANTA’S MAGICAL KEY

Date December 22, 2007

One day at the North Pole when Christmas was near,
Mrs. Claus told the Elves, “I’m beginning to fear.
Poor Santa is worried — he’s not quite himself.
Please find out the trouble,” she asked the Chief Elf.
The Elves — they all wondered — what bothered him so.
With Christmas approaching, they just had to know.
“Times have changed,” sighed poor Santa, “and homes have changed too.
Some just have no fireplace — now what shall I do?
There are old homes and new homes and buildings so tall.
I must find a way to get into them all.
If there is no chimney for delivering my toys –
I need a new way to reach all girls and boys.”
As those words left his lips, Santa shouted with glee –
“I’ve thought of a way that will really help me!
What each family needs is a magical key,
To be hung on their door on each Christmas Eve.
A key that will only let me through their door,
To deliver their presents and do nothing more.”
The elves were excited — the solution was near,
Now Santa was jolly and full of good cheer.
Millions of keys were produced right away,
And sent on ahead to await the big day.
Soon Christmas Eve came and the sleigh was packed tight.
The reindeer and Santa flew off in the night
The first home on his route caused Santa a fright,
For there was no fireplace or chimney in sight.
The windows and doors were locked tight as can be,
And his only hope was a magical key.
And there on the door Santa found — as he’d hoped –
A magical key along with a note.
The note simply said, ‘Please have a snack here’.
And then Santa knew there was no need to fear.
With the key in his hand he slid open the door,
Filled all the stockings, placed gifts on the floor.
Then turning to leave and straightening his pack,
He spied cookies and milk — his most favorite snack
Through the dark star-filled night Santa traveled around
To city and country, to village and town.
Old homes and new homes and buildings so tall,
All homes with no fireplace or chimney at all -
No home was a problem for delivering his toys.
Santa found just the way to reach all girls and boys.
As the warm glow of morning brightened the sky,
Santa laughed to his reindeer, “To the Pole we must fly!
It’s time for a rest now - our work here is done.
The magical keys made this Christmas such fun.
And now it’s so simple for me Christmas Eve,
When a family remembers to use Santa’s Key.”
